|
|
Hello,
My question is on how I can put a value to an upcoming consulting
opportunity. Here are some details.
I collected a product for years from a old, high profile company.
They are a fairly large company. Over the years, through the product
and through my research, I obtained a level of expertise that is
second-to-none even though I am an outsider.
I have recently realized that there is value to this knowledge. For
one, I have no competition (the company would have trouble obtaining
this knowledge because records are lost/destroyed and the time/effort
isn't cost justified).
I've contacted them and they are fairly excited about what I bring to
the table. Obvious focus areas are public relations (my story...their
product) coupled with some online efforts around a virtual museum (a
small sample, not my entire database of product), historical answers
for questions would get channeled to me, loaned product for a physical
display, grooming to be their product history guru.
The question is, how much value is this really? Obviously there is
value or they wouldn't be taking this further. But on the down side,
companies like to look forward, not back so there is only so much value
they might perceive here. They will come back with a budget and a
proposal for consulting/expertise and when they do, how much do I
negotiate when I don't know how to answer the above value questions.
On the one hand, I don't want to come off as greedy, but on the other
hand, I don't want to give my expertise away for free...I've put a lot
of my time and effort into it.
I want this to be value-based, not time-based. My reasoning is that it
shouldn't matter how long it takes me to provide/complete something
because nobody else could simply step in and do the same (it would take
them months/years to get that knowledge..if ever).
I'd welcome any advice, opinions, comments around how to come to a
dollar proposal given this situation. Hopefully this is enough detail
to allow you to form an opinion or provide advice. Thanks. |

Without specifics, it is like asking how much the moon is worth.
