I plan to become a part-time consultant (independent). I found some
interesting articles and tips about building up customer tiers, about
consulting resources and about building a website for the consulting
practice...I would like to know whether it is necessary to build a
website for being an independent consultant.
Thx in adavacne!

No. In fact, a website might do more harm than good. The only
thing that matters for a consultant is selling work, and then
later, doing the work so you can bill for it. Everything else
is a time waster and a money sink. My fear is that you will get
bogged down in logos, business card designs, font decisions,
color schemes, and never go out and sell anything. Without a
sale, everything else is wasted time & effort.

If you are serious about working as a consultant in the long run, do
build a website. It is not only good for your business image, it can
also be a very cost-effective marketing tool. Depending upon the
nature of your consulting area, there could be people looking for your
services on the internet. Without a presence on the web, you may loose
out on those potential client base.
When you do build a web site, make is as informative as you can. Good
contents will attract more visitors which in turn will help sell your
services.

Hi X,
If you want to constantly write articles, write a great blog, sell software,
etc.... It's great as long as you can keep it up consistently, and keep it
aimed at your target market for your consulting services.
If not, Mr.Weeks is probably right. Out of all the IT consultants I've met
over my career, the best and brightest, do not have a website. I have one
though, and it hasn't brought me any consulting work.
